Andy’s Iron Will
The Ironman competition, organised by the World Triathlon Corporation, consists of a gruelling 3.86 km swim, 180 km cycle ride and then a marathon run of 42 km. Definitely not for the faint hearted, our very own Andy took on this awesome challenge and talked to me all about it…
“6 months of training and more “why am I doing this?!” moments than I can remember and I found myself at the start line of Ironman Zurich. It was a lovely morning and Lake Zurich was the perfect setting for the swim. After an hour and a half I was out on the bike section of the course, 2 x 90km laps including “The Beast” and “Heartbreak Hill” to make things slightly more difficult.
Seven hours later and I was setting off on the marathon. The course is a four lap circuit of the city which takes runners within feet of the finish line, only to turn right and set off on another 10 kilometre lap!
It was great to have my family out there cheering me on and the support from the locals was amazing the whole way round. 14 hours 30 minutes later I crossed the line saying to myself “never again”. A week later and I had started planning the next one!”
We are all very proud of Andy for this incredible achievement, especially given that only 70% of competitors managed to complete the race.
